We just came home from lunch with Feliza Yojcom and her family. We had her specialty plate which is chicken with cardamom spices, rice, potato and fresh tortillas de maiz. She served me so much food and then I was chatting it up with all the family that I couldn’t eat all the food on my plate! She walked up and down her dirt street and introduced us to her children, grandchildren, nieces etc. Everyone has been so inviting and excited to meet us. They quickly discussed Guatemalan politics, drug problems among their people, lack of work and other social concerns. Her nephews were busily fixing up the dirt road between the houses so the rain water wouldn’t flood the coffee plantations and their houses.
It has been amazing getting to know the local people and to hear their stories. It is hard to imagine what these people have been through given they have witnessed and survived a genocide against their own people. It will be hard to leave San Juan already since I head up to Huehue tomorrow (by myself!).
Time for another stroll around San Juan where we will again be greeted by the local men, women and children in their beautiful huipils and smiles. We might even get to hear the sound of the evangelical church which is known for singing very loudly for as long as two to three hours straight. I wouldn't really call it singing. The church next to our hotel projects more of a scream than a song (listen to the youtube video). Oh well, good thing I brought ear plugs!
